Who is this?

Any ideas who or what this man is referring to in this recruitment post?

Looking for Angel/VC investors for media ventures in the Middle East backed by a well known media figure.

I for one cannot wait to find out more - especially what Emirates Leasing, a subsidiary of Dubai Islamic Bank, has got to do with it.

Where's the original recruitment ad? can you post a link?

anon_mediator said...

sorry, that's all I could find so far. Not so much a recruitment post as a call for investment ....

Anonymous said...

He's looking for VC or AI:
VC: Venture capital is a fund raising technique for companies who are willing to exchange equity in their company in return for money to grow or expand their business.

AI: An angel investor generally wants less control of your company and a slower return on investment, however the criteria for investment are likely to be similar. Angel investor groups are great sources of private capital and frequently invest angel money into new companies.

yes, we know what he wants - we just want to know who or what he wants it for.

Actually thanks for the explanation- I needed it :)

@12.08

LOL! Mate you better do some journo homework or some Internet searching, otherwise minus-7 star accom awaits.

However I'm sure PR companies are looking for, uh, innovation at this time.

Anonymous said...

Yo journos!

Please keep an eye on one of your young ones. After reported conflict, then possible PR savvy resolution, the young one has gone quiet the past few days. Don't know, but could be battling a sandstorm.

New stream maybe...

One use for UAE magazines is to recycle them into origami sculptures. The advertisement pages are best for this...

Having scavenged a dozen or so, I realised that this is actually a useful way of seeing which magazines are actually doing business.

I.e. those which I have found most resources are the ones with the most advertising, hence probably the best magazines in the market.

My initial research says that Arabies Trends is very useful as is Gulf News Friday Magazine.

For comments / abuse

Anonymous said...

ad pages aren't a good barometer of success in Dubai mags, as a lot of ads could be freebies to fill up pages, to suck up to agencies, and to look as if the magazine is doing well.

Anonymous said...

Anyone that thinks Gulf News' Friday magazine is a good magazine needs to take a serious look in the mirror. It is awful on every level. Just pick it up and go through the articles. Also about 8/10 ads each week are freebies.

Anonymous said...

Dear 1.12.

Do you mean the girl who is in media but thinks that she can go home for Christmas and come back without cancelling her visa after having lost her job?

Then pretend not to know the rules.

If so what a relief.

This is the latest. On Monday, May 25, Khaleej Times sacked 5 people from the editorial. Suprisingly, the ones who are sacked are the better ones.

anon_mediator said...

we have had a request for a new thread about a high-up person at a publishing company spending the night in jail last week. Unfortunately, we don't have any other sources to vouch for whether it's true.

Anonymous said...

yeah it's true! I have CID source

Anonymous said...

Anon: 25 May, 2009 11:12
Trends has a lot of ads, and some of them are card insertions. Would be really expensive to fake. Also, the magazine is truly heavy with articles, with some key people interviewed.

Anon: 25 May, 2009 19:07
Gulf News Friday is a superb magazine, maybe you can squish its editorial from a 'purist' point of view, but its very much a must read, at least amongst a certain demographic.

Only other magazines worth farming up to now have been Zahrat Al Khaleej and Kul Al Usra (arabic ladies mags for those who don't know).

Anonymous said...

A source of mine reports that a gentleman who is group ceo of a Dubai based media company specializing in outdoor and mags and formerly in radio, spent a night in jail after bouncing a cheque made out to a company in Fujairah.

Anonymous said...

It was either Sharjah or Bur Dubai stations,if you have the right contacts!!

Anonymous said...

Who care? Morons! Far more of you who ought to be in jail are roaming the streets like sex pests, so if one of you got caught, good riddance.

Can we get a post about the departure of Didier Brun from KT and the reassertion of control by the Galadari brothers? Does the mark the return of the "my dear readers" column? I hope so.

Anonymous said...

This well reasoned prose comes courtesy of Hani Bathish, courts reporter for The National.

Gives the holocaust deniers at Gulf News a run for their money:

"The Zionist Masonic Conspiracy and the World Economic System

New World Order indeed, more like global chaos in preparation for the largest human engineered apocalypse to face human kind to date. The larger wave is yet to hit the developing countries of the world, in particular the Arab and Muslim countries, but its impact will be devastating, like a Tsunami of biblical proportions. Its architects, the keepers of a secret order whose emblems are the eye, the pyramid and the Star of David, are preparing for absolute global domination, much like the comic villains of Austin Powers, except no one will be laughing this time...."

Anonymous said...

Hani's agenda (if it makes it to court stories) somewhat balances that of the National's other, very foreign editors, some of who couldn't write a food review without bringing in an Israeli angle.

Anonymous said...

examples please, @08:15

Anonymous said...

i think the national is a secret jew paper staffed by zionist elders who love israel and hate palestinians. it's about time someone told the truth about newland's zionist plots. especially in the food reviews. i happen to know that james brennan food critic is a jew and his editors are also jews. he reviews manakish shops that use blood of arab children in pastries.

Is anyone going to comment on this media blackout; or does it extend all the way to anonymous forums?

Desert Orchid - who is Heerkani Chohan? It would appear he's one of the few journos here prepared to do his job.

Anonymous said...

What blackout? Do a search. This has been reported since January in Gulf News, Zawya, etc etc etc etc. Don't believe everything the indy says.

Anonymous said...

that story - al fajer, angry investors, fake ads etc, was in The National months ago.

Anonymous said...

Dear All,

It saddens us to inform you all that as a disciplinary action, the services of Abdallah Jechi – Asst HR Manager ARN has been terminated with immediate effect.

It was brought to our notice that Abdallah was involved in some negative discussions about the organisation & also leaked out some confidential HR information. We, as management, need team builders & supporters and will definitely not accept this kind of an attitude, gossip or rumour spreading within the organisation.

We have an open culture at AMG and should respect the freedom given to us by the management rather than misuse it. We expect our employees to support us in our function, focus & put in their best efforts towards their assigned jobs.

Anonymous said...

If the Indy had bothered to go through the clips, it would have realised that this story had been covered extensively months before. Some media may have crumbled to pressure, others were merely overlooking an old, well reported dispute.

p.s. looks like the vindictive bastard who posted that unfortunate hani bathish item has achieved his objective: hani's been suspended/sacked.

Fellow Hacks,
Gulf News has sacked 20 from editorial on Monday. Is the National next? given that their pagenation got reduced in Feb? what you think about their subscription campaign?

Anonymous said...

Off topic but pretty big slip up by The National this morning - the article on the Dubai resident lost in the Air France crash, and a Fly Dubai advert stuck in the middle?

http://www.thenational.ae/article/20090603/NATIONAL/706029865/1001

Anonymous said...

Yes, please start a thread about Brun's departure. Also, who are the mysterious five from KT? I'm dying to know!

malibu said...

subscription campaign - yes why not? could be the lifeblood of the paper..cant imagine they actually sell that many copies - who does? perhaps mags/papers over here need to start moving away from free distribution. all good having names receiving your title and all that, but if the uae market is to move towards a more developed publishing industry market model, perhaps that has to be overcome. would be painful in terms of audit etc, but if everyone did it...?

Anonymous said...

The outdoor campaign by the National is extremely poor.
There are a number of pompous positioning statements which are meant to be thought provoking but are not .The copy seems to have been written by someone who does not have English as a first language.
Too clever by half and not about to sell the paper.
The final stupidity is the position and size of the main National logo and brand.
you can hardly see it.
would have been far better to blow uo the logo size and leave it at that.Waste of money, shoot the ad agency.

Anonymous said...

God you lot are slow - anyone seen this? Press Gazette stating that Ind on Sunday are reporting that Newland is to resign as ed of the National - http://blogs.pressgazette.co.uk/wire/5181 - we need thread on this and quick.

"p.s. looks like the vindictive bastard who posted that unfortunate hani bathish item has achieved his objective: hani's been suspended/sacked."

Quite right too! How can you have a court reporter, who also writes such utter vile nonsense on a blog with his real name and photo?

The National has to uphold some sort of standards or it becomes no better than the Gulf News, with their sickening denial of six-million Jews being slaughtered in WW2.

You really think someone with those sick views should be a reporter on The National?

Anonymous said...

There are loads of people with "sick" views in every walk of life.. including journalism. Some of these people believe in no tolerance, some others only hire their countrymen, labelling others by various names.
This is some new form of people censoring that you are advocating?
I don't know if Hani has been sacked (the blog has been removed though). But a poster on anonymous blog which has spewed some venom on tons of people - even naming them - is hardly in a position to be a judge on a recruitment board. Get a life man!

Anonymous said...

17:51
hey turd.

You come from some place where you can say all this and not be sued?

What you meant was "the copy seems to have been written in another language and translated to English".

There, I corrected it for you.

Anonymous said...

@1750 I have no idea who 1751 is but you're by far the bigger cunt

Anonymous said...

Sued for what ?
What I wrote was factual to me.There is nothing offensive about it.The National is a English language paper.Surely one should be expecting to read English in both the paper and it's marketing.
As an example , i have a number of friends who are from India , Pakistan some who are Emirati who all comment about the poor English of the other two main English language papers.
Marketing for other language papers is not written in English and then translated,it is written by people who have the respective language as their first.

Anonymous said...

re battish. his views are childish, but vile is pushing it. and not even approaching holocaust denial. get out into the middle east and you will find the fear of conspiracy everywhere. and why? because there have been enough conspiracies to fuel the fear. yes, it is tiresome, but i dont see why that should lead to removal from the courts beat. noone suggested that he let his geopolitical views interfere with chasing down stories on fraud and fiddling. come on, let's face it, there have been far bigger issues at the national, none of which ended up in suspension...

Anonymous said...

12.46.

Marketing copy is written by people who can think, write professionally in English. A plumber who only speaks English as the first and last language is not a copy writer. An Arab whose first language is Arabic but who is creative, and has been trained to write in English will obviously be more qualified. Many countries have education systems and a culture that promotes bi-lingualism.

No one is saying the National ad is good. It is how you are criticising it that is a problem.

Maybe not in your case, but this first language argument is usually the last resort of failed expats whose first language is English to run down things. It serves no purpose in an argument except to speculate on what someone grew up speaking. That is why it is objectionable.

Anonymous said...

Re:12.46

I'm not one to demand perfect grammar and punctuation on a blog but since the post is critical of English language skills, herewith some notes:

The second sentence is an example of an incomplete sentence. It would be preferable to run the first two sentences together separated by a comma.

In English the indefinite article is "a" unless followed by a vowel, in which case it is "an". So, not "a English" but rather "an English".

The word "it's" is a contraction of "it is". The word "its" is subjective possessive and is the correct usage in the context of phrases such as "... its marketing ..."

Commas are inserted immediately after the word, without a space before but with a space after.

The following sentence is a mess: "As an example , i have a number of friends who are from India , Pakistan some who are Emirati who all comment about the poor English of the other two main English language papers."

There are a couple of other things. Or is "couple" singular even though it refers to two, like "team" and therefore should be "is a couple of other things? No, definitely "are" in this case. English is hard!

Anonymous said...

@0558 bejesus facking hell wot kind of cant does his ting on da blog whining about gramma. Wot da fack are you? William bleeding Shakespeare? You Caaaaaannnnnnnttttt.

Anonymous said...

@ 12.00 I think the point was that the person criticising poor English skills should at least write that criticism with a reasonable level of language and grammar proficiency. "The pot calling the kettle black" I think you say in English.

Anonymous said...

An hotel or a hotel ?
you lot are amazing. Why don't you just say that you think the comment about English being the first language is racist ? Clearly it is not and clearly this country with it's veneer of western consumerism is in real trouble under the surface.
Potentially a great place but to use another English line 'you can't have your cake and eat it'.

Anonymous said...

17.56. duh. I don't know if it is racist or not, and I really don't care. It is, as I mentioned, usually the last resort of failed "expats" whose only language is English. I have only heard those losers use this argument.
Are these losers racist? Maybe.
Are they trying to play up the only card they think they have? Yes.
I only know English so what I speak must be correct is rather naive, don't you think?

Anonymous said...

If I was marketing to an Indian audience I may use an Indian, who can use reference points of that culture.

If I wanted to appeal to a British audience, I would use a British person.

I could go on, however my point is language and culture are inextricably entwined.

Because of that there are clear differences in the English used. As a British person, I find the way Indians write a little odd - a bit last century. I am sure they find the way British people write 'unconventional'.

Quite often I think no one wins in the UAE, because all of the character of the language has to be stripped out to make it universally understood.

I would not necessarily rush to a native British English speaker for a marketing campaign. We often over complicate sentence structures, and words we think are commonly understood are often not.

However, I am far more likely to react well to a marketing campaign written by someone from my culture, who knows the signs and symbols of my culture.

Completely separately, the National campaign makes no sense to me.

"If Movement is Progress, then take a stand."

What is that trying to say? Be a Luddite? Stand in the way of progress by buying the National? Oppose moving forward?

Seems an odd thing for a newspaper to stand for.

Anonymous said...

13.20. Well said.

However, it does not answer my point that just because you speak one lanaguage you must be good at it.

Unconventional or old-fashioned are luxuries when one is debating correct usage.

Incidentally, I don't think the Brits are unconventional. And, I don't think many Indians who are are in language-related profession are 'last-century'. I don't know if most Brits use this annoying, silly slang - ciggy, footie, frenchie...

And yes, the national campaign sucks.

Anonymous said...

I love the National ad. It takes my mind off other things like the heat, difficult interviews, deadlines and what to eat for lunch..

simply because I spent a good 20 mins on Sheikh Zayed Road trying to see if I understand it better today than yesterday. beats sudoku.
rofl

Anonymous said...

I think its amazing The National is spending on these ads.
With others falling by the wayside, they really are splashing the cash and making themselves number one ahead of time. Good marketing is under rated. And, given the wages, I'm guessing 95% of us would head to the capital at the drop of a hat - meaning they will soon be in a position to hand pick staff and maintain their position.
