Good marketing is under rated. And, given the wages, I'm guessing 95% of us would head to the capital at the drop of a hat - meaning they will soon be in a position to hand pick staff and maintain their position.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3096398547821208840.post-69779523501123599552009-06-27T21:28:15.742+04:002009-06-27T21:28:15.742+04:00I love the National ad. Well said.

However, it does not answer my point that just because you speak one lanaguage you must be good at it.

Unconventional or old-fashioned are luxuries when one is debating correct usage.

Incidentally, I don't think the Brits are unconventional. And, I don't think many Indians who are are in language-related profession are 'last-century'. As a British person, I find the way Indians write a little odd - a bit last century. I am sure they find the way British people write 'unconventional'.

Quite often I think no one wins in the UAE, because all of the character of the language has to be stripped out to make it universally understood.

I would not necessarily rush to a native British English speaker for a marketing campaign. We often over complicate sentence structures, and words we think are commonly understood are often not.

However, I am far more likely to react well to a marketing campaign written by someone from my culture, who knows the signs and symbols of my culture.

Completely separately, the National campaign makes no sense to me.

"If Movement is Progress, then take a stand."

What is that trying to say? It would be preferable to run the first two sentences together separated by a comma.

In English the indefinite article is "a" unless followed by a vowel, in which case it is "an". So, not "a English" but rather "an English".

The word "it's" is a contraction of "it is". The word "its" is subjective possessive and is the correct usage in the context of phrases such as "... its marketing ..."

Commas are inserted immediately after the word, without a space before but with a space after.

The following sentence is a mess: "As an example , i have a number of friends who are from India , Pakistan some who are Emirati who all comment about the poor English of the other two main English language papers."

There are a couple of other things. Or is "couple" singular even though it refers to two, like "team" and therefore should be "is a couple of other things? No, definitely "are" in this case. English is hard!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3096398547821208840.post-8712753760247718122009-06-15T10:42:32.866+04:002009-06-15T10:42:32.866+04:0012.46.

A plumber who only speaks English as the first and last language is not a copy writer. An Arab whose first language is Arabic but who is creative, and has been trained to write in English will obviously be more qualified. Many countries have education systems and a culture that promotes bi-lingualism.

No one is saying the National ad is good. It is how you are criticising it that is a problem.

Maybe not in your case, but this first language argument is usually the last resort of failed expats whose first language is English to run down things. It serves no purpose in an argument except to speculate on what someone grew up speaking. That is why it is objectionable.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3096398547821208840.post-69610922002876174602009-06-14T20:47:26.286+04:002009-06-14T20:47:26.286+04:00re battish. his views are childish, but vile is pu...re battish. his views are childish, but vile is pushing it. and not even approaching holocaust denial. get out into the middle east and you will find the fear of conspiracy everywhere. and why? because there have been enough conspiracies to fuel the fear. yes, it is tiresome, but i dont see why that should lead to removal from the courts beat. noone suggested that he let his geopolitical views interfere with chasing down stories on fraud and fiddling. come on, let's face it, there have been far bigger issues at the national, none of which ended up in suspension...Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3096398547821208840.post-34034401092137243962009-06-14T12:46:51.574+04:002009-06-14T12:46:51.574+04:00Sued for what ?
