Rewriting history

Holy crap. Even by Gulf News standards, this editorial is a shocker. The opening para from Dr Mohammad Al Mutawa (professor of sociology at UAE University in Al Ain) says:

Today, the whole world stands as a witness to the fact that the Nazi holocaust was a mere lie, which was devised by the Zionists to blackmail humanity. The same Zionist entity swindled the world out of billions of dollars over the years to compensate the wrong and unjust which they claim to have been inflicted on their people.

Obviously, a qualification in history isn't a requirement to study sociology in Al Ain.

Update: The Guardian has picked up on the Gulf News column.

The writer is just stating facts, nothing else. Everybody knows that Hitler killed many people, including Jews, but he did not gas millions of Jews. But nobody can question the Holocaust claim or the racket the Jews have been running for years because it is a crime to raise doubt or question!!!

How embarrassing. And frankly disgusting.

Let's be honest. No one can be happy with what Israel is doing. It is terrible. However, what would the UAE, UK, US or any other nation do if its neighbour persisted in lobbing over bombs indiscriminately. Sit back and accept it? Unlikely.

The saddest thing is no one from the Arab world is blaming the real culprit - Iran.

Iran is is supplying the missiles, technology, know how and diaffection - keeping its hands clean as stirs up the Jihad passions of its Moslim brothers and blood flows around it. Until Iran is contained one way or another, the Palestinians will continue to suffer.

When will the Arabs wake up and realize they are being used as Iranian pawns? Arabs subservient to Persians - who'd have thunk it.

Gulf News gets worse and worse. I would be embarrassed to work there. But then again, everyone knows the quality of the upper editorial staff - what do they expect??

Anon @ 00.09, your detailed rebuttle to the Holocaust was compelling, but rather useless without some evidence. Do you have any? Or are you just talking to your arse? Oh. right.

Anonymous said...

It's only a crime in some countries, you know, like Austria.

Hitler, holocausts and a revisionist frenzy are meaningless sideshows. Israel does what it likes becuase it has implicit, explicit and ... this bit's important ... cash backing from the US.

The Palestinians get spanked because they have nothing anyone wants, so nobody really helps them out.

Someone needs to cut them a break.

The GN piece is silly and dangerous.

Anonymous said...

Dear Anon at 00:09:

You're absoluteley right - There's no way that Hitler could have murdered 6 million jews. It was mostly allied propaganda to discredit the Nazis at the end of the war.

Also, the moon landings were faked, Diana was murdered by MI5 and the CIA orchestrated 9/11.

I know all this because Elvis told me.

you must work for the US media if you so blithely swallow all this disinformation about iran. ok, there are, for sure, some links between hamas and iran, but viewing this conflict through the prism of anti-iranian propaganda is laughable. you are merely parroting neo-con, aipac propaganda.

Absolutely disgraceful from Gulf News. Giving columns to Holocaust deniers? Editorial staff with any integrity should hand in their notices.

What would they do if they were invaded, occupied, settled and ethnically cleansed by a group of people that came from another continent claiming to have a 3,000 year old right to their land?

You're just an ignorant dumbass. Perhaps as idiotic as a holocaust denier.

Everyone knows it is Iran that is behind Hamas - controlling it, training its members, and funding it... There is no secret there...

Iran has done the same thing in Iraq - hugely successfully - it controls what goes on, not the Western milirary outside Baghdad. Same goes for Afghanistan too.

Iran is growing in influence and power all the time in the Middle East. Only it could stop Hamas tomorrow. What gives them the ability to do this is fuckwit US and UK policies which alienate the Arab people - pushing them to the only country seen to be able to provide effective resistance (and the only country to have successfully defeated Israel).

Israel was never an Arab country - and was never a Jewish one either. It is a place where both sets of people lived side by side - invariably controlled by one alien empire or another.

From The Guardian today:

I know that the Dubai-based daily Gulf News has not been regarded as one of the world's greatest truth-telling newspapers, but a column by Mohammad Abdullah Al Mutawa in Sunday's issue sets a new low point in myth-making.

Here are the opening two paragraphs:

"Today, the whole world stands as a witness to the fact that the Nazi holocaust was a mere lie, which was devised by the Zionists to blackmail humanity. The same Zionist entity swindled the world out of billions of dollars over the years to compensate the wrong and unjust which they claim to have been inflicted on their people.

"It is evident that the holocaust was a conspiracy hatched by the Zionists and Nazis, and many innocent people gave their lives as a result of this inhuman plot."

This goes way beyond the paper's normal acceptance of censorship (and the resulting self-censorship). No wonder, according to a source, British journalists on the Gulf News payroll are reported to be "working on their CVs with vigour."

But what about the paper's readers in the United Arab Emirates? Do they really believe this stuff?

Anonymous said...

Why are all the comments anonymous?

The same people who shout and scream about free speech are now all angry at Gulf News for printing an opinion. You guys need to decide whether you believe in free speech or only in speech that you want to hear. As far as Holocaust and the claim that Hitler gassed millions of Jews is concerned, it depends on whether you believe, buy whatever the media dishes out to you, or you use your own brain.

The holocaust happened and Jews suffered. Full stop. But what does that have to do with the oppression being meted out by the Israeli war machine to the Palestinian people?

That some idiot in Brooklyn who became a Jew has more of a right to 'return' to Israel and drive off and brutalize a Palestinian with a deed to occupied land is a topic that the alarmingly clever minds of the Pro-Israel lobby never answer.

Bravo to media who have become obsessesed with villifying Iran and Ahmedinejad while Pakistan and India might go to war over the Mumbai massacres, Israeli destroys Gaza, and suicide bombers from so-called 'moderate Arab states' continue to flood Iraq with impunity. Well done, you have all made the world a better place!

Yes the Iranians do have control. Much as Shias and Sunnis have been at war in the past, Iran has been very successful in uniting all Moslems around the Israel issue.

Iran has been able to do this because no Sunni-led country has been effective against Israel. Egypt? Long given up, Syria - bowed to Iran in Palestine, the Gulf - terrified of their Shia minorities anyway...

Anonymous said...

Apologies for this long piece, but I though this worth reading - and very good balance to the Gulf News 'column'.

Israel acts because the world won't defend it

The scenes from Gaza are heartbreaking. But the whole conflict could be avoided if the Palestinians said one small thing
Daniel Finkelstein

It was strictly forbidden to have a notebook in Belsen, but my Aunt Ruth had one anyway. Just a little pocket diary - an appointment book with one of those tiny pencils. And in it, in the autumn of 1944, she noted that Anne Frank and Anne's sister, Ruth's schoolfriend Margot, had arrived in the concentration camp.

My mother and my aunt had been watching through the camp wire when the Franks arrived. Mum remembers it well, because they had been excited to spot girls they knew from the old days in Amsterdam. They had played in the same streets, been to the same schools and Ruth and Margot attended Hebrew classes together. The pair had once been pressed into service to act as bridesmaids, when a secretive Jewish wedding had taken place at the synagogue during their lesson time.

But Ruth and Margot did not grow up together. Because while Ruth and my mother lived, Margot and Anne never left Belsen. They died of typhus.

I am telling you this story because I want you to understand Israel. Not to agree with all it does, not to keep quiet when you want to protest against its actions, not to side with it always, merely to understand Israel.
There are two things about the tale that help to provide insight. The first is that all these things, the gas chambers, the concentration camps, the attempt to wipe Jews from the face of the Earth, they aren't ancient history, and they aren't fable. They happened to real people and they happened in our lifetime. Anne and Margot Frank were just children to my aunt and my mother; they weren't icons, or symbols of anything.

The second is that world opinion weeps now for Anne Frank. But world opinion did not save her.

The origin of the state of Israel is not religion or nationalism, it is the experience of oppression and murder, the fear of total annihilation and the bitter conclusion that world opinion could not be relied upon to protect the Jews.

Israel was the idea of a journalist. Theodor Herzl was the Paris correspondent of the Neue Freie Presse when he witnessed anti-Semitic rioting against the Jewish army captain Alfred Dreyfus who had been falsely accused of espionage. Herzl was then among the small corps of journalists who in 1895 witnessed the famous ceremony of disgrace in which Dreyfus was stripped of his epaulettes.

The experience led Herzl to abandon his belief in assimilation. He became convinced that Jews would only be safe if they had their own national home. Herzl became the first leader of modern Zionism. For many years many Jews resisted Herzl's conclusion. My grandfather was among them. But the experience of Jews all over the world in the first half of the 20th century - not just in Europe but in the Middle East too - rather bore out Herzl.

So when Israel is urged to respect world opinion and put its faith in the international community the point is rather being missed. The very idea of Israel is a rejection of this option. Israel only exists because Jews do not feel safe as the wards of world opinion. Zionism, that word that is so abused, so reviled, is founded on a determination that, at the end of the day, somehow the Jews will defend themselves and their fellow Jews from destruction. If world opinion was enough, there would be no Israel.

The poverty and the death and the despair among the Palestinians in Gaza moves me to tears. How can it not? Who can see pictures of children in a war zone or a slum street and not be angry and bewildered and driven to protest? And what is so appalling is that it is so unnecessary. For there can be peace and prosperity at the smallest of prices. The Palestinians need only say that they will allow Israel to exist in peace. They need only say this tiny thing, and mean it, and there is pretty much nothing they cannot have.

Yet they will not say it. And they will not mean it. For they do not want the Jews. Again and again - again and again - the Palestinians have been offered a nation state in a divided Palestine. And again and again they have turned the offer down, for it has always been more important to drive out the Jews than to have a Palestinian state. It is difficult sometimes to avoid the feeling that Hamas and Hezbollah don't want to kill Jews because they hate Israel. They hate Israel because they want to kill Jews.

There cannot be peace until this changes. For Israel will not rely on airy guarantees and international gestures to defend it. At its very core, it will not. It will lay down its arms when the Jews are safe, but it will not do it until they are.

And if you reflect on it, doesn't recent experience bear this out? Just as Herzl was borne out? A year or so back I met a teacher while I was on holiday and fell to talking with him about Israel. He was a nice man and all he wanted was for fighting to stop and to end the suffering of children. And he had a question for me.

Why, he asked, doesn't Israel offer to give back the West Bank and Gaza? Why doesn't it just let the Palestinians have a state there? If the Palestinians turned it down, he said, then at least liberal opinion would be on Israel's side and would rally to its assistance.

So I patiently explained to this kind, good man that Israel had, at Camp David in 2000, made precisely this offer and that it had been rejected out of hand by Yassir Arafat, not even used as the basis for negotiation. I told him that Israel was no longer in Gaza, having withdrawn unilaterally and taken the settlers with it. The Palestinians had greeted this movement with suicide bombs and rockets. Yet the teacher, with all his compassion, wasn't even aware of all this. And liberal opinion? Sad to relate, my new friend's faith in it was misplaced. It has turned strongly against Israel.

Israel has made many mistakes. It has acted too aggressively on some occasions, has been too defensive on others. The country hasn't always respected the human rights of its enemies as it should have done. What nation under such a threat would have avoided all errors?

But you know what? As Iran gets a nuclear weapon and so the potential for another Holocaust against the Jews and world opinion does nothing, I am not so sure that the errors of world opinion are so much to be preferred to the errors of Israel.

"I hear from people in Gulf News that the article was a mistranslation and that some people are in trouble there. It has been removed from the web site too."

Haha, so that's the line they are taking. BS. Even if it was mistranslated, it was still written in plain English and presumably went through a sub/chief sub/editor before being printed. What has mistranslation got to do with that.

I used to freelance for GN, but due to the absolute appalling sub editing which would result in embarassing articles, I stopped. Now, their freelancers consist of Bangladeshi "Freelancers" writing in barely legible English.

Anonymous said...

If people want to deny the holocaust then, while I don't agree with them, I support their right to do so. But surely the issue with this article is that it is based on no facts or research whatsoever but is instead nothing but a hate-filled rant. How does Israel attacking Hamas prove that the holocaust was a lie? Unless the author presents some evidence then it doesn't.

If Gulf News wants to question the holocaust then fine, but this particular article is not journalism; not that very much that Gulf News publishes qualifies as journalism in any case. Perhaps most worrying of all is that the author claims to be a 'professor'. It doesn't say much for education standards in the UAE.

And the article is still on the website.

Anonymous said...

"Anon 11.15 & 11.22: I learnt a long time ago never to argue, debate or discuss with morons like you."

Whatever.

The fact is that anti-Semitism created the conditions for the creation of Israel and as long as it persists Israel will have the unflinching support of powerful allies.

Anonymous said...

The article is still on their website and although I am unable to see the print edition, I can't find any reference on the wesbite to critical letters to the editor published about the piece...

Anonymous said...

@11:22 maybe i should also refrain from arguing with you, but hell, it's a friday and babies are still being killed, so what the fuck. yes, sure, there is a link between hamas and iran, but the extent of the support is nowhere near as close as you and your neocon compadres would have it. they are ideologically opposed but, true, they both want to screw israel and end the occuption. magnifying the linkages between them is a propaganda move aiming to draw attention away from the slaughter of the innocents by highlighting the terrorist bogeyman and his islamic republic backers. this draws attention away from the true aim of cast lead: extermination of a democratically elected body while maintaining the status quo regarding israeli expansionism onto the west bank. and by relying on the wsj op-ed pages to justify your point, you merely underline your naivety. these muppets were cheerleaders for the war on iraq and would love to do the same for iran, partly at least, to help israel.

Anonymous said...

Iran - the 1979 revolution was handed on a plate to the islamists by the CIA who handed over lists of leftwingers to be executed by the mullahs - the yanks preffered the hajis to communists back then and Iran was close to going red.

The UK was continually bombed by the IRA and realised that the strategies now employed by the IDF were completely counterproductive. Hamas are not the Taleban and were elected to power in a free election the UAE can only dream of. If you want peace you must talk to your enemies.

Holocaust deniers are flat-earthers. But there again a lot of arabs supported the Nazis - I am not at all surprised by the GN column - just that it has taken them so long to speak their minds.

Anonymous said...

Even when Israel is bombing the living day lights out of the Palestinians, the Iran haters are looking for reasons to start another war. Since the whole WMD thing was shown to be a ruse, unspecified 'links' and 'support' with Palestinians are the new 'proof' that another Middle Eastern country must be invaded.

Sad that newspapers like the Wall Street Journal and Haaretz are being cited. Why not try citing anything in Arabic, Farsi, Turkish or Kurdish. Oh wait, you don't speak any of those languages, so the bleatings of neo-conservatives who got started the Iraq mess will have to do.

The interesting thing about conspiracy theories is that there is a small chance, just a minute possibility, that some of them are true.

And here's another interesting perspective: Why do so many people freak out at the suggestion that the holocaust was a hoax? Surely, the possibility that 6 million didn't actually die is a good thing??? Another case of bizarre human psyche!

Anonymous said...

People who argue that 6 million Jews were not killed by Nazis aren't trying to point out that life on earth is better than you think. They can say whatever the hell they want, but they're opportunists just like AIPAC folks who label US foreign policy critics "anti-semites," and Hamas people who position corpses for page-1 shots. This is all part of the fight, not peripheral to it, in modern war, no matter how antique these grievances may seem. The Gulf News editorial sucks not because it's wrong but because its "proof" that the Holocaust never happened is that Israel is killing Palestinian civilians today.

Anonymous said...

There is no interesting thing about conspiracy theories - Occam's razor shows us that the most likely answer is the correct one. The USA did go to the moon; Sept 11th was nothing to do with the Israelis; 6million Jews, 20million Soviet citizens and millions more homosexuals, gypsies and disabled people were killed by the Nazis.

Convoluted, paranoid rantings that have no basis in fact and rely entirely on story-telling are complete utter bollocks and have no place in any credible newspaper.

Anonymous said...

The reason some people "freak out" is because as humans we are supposed to learn lessons - not continually repeat them. Denying what has been done, is of course to refuse to accept the past as a lesson.

The holocaust was the darkest era in human history. The systematic murder of millions of men, women, children because of their faith, race or sexuality, carried out with cold, industrial precision is something we cannot be allowed to forget.

The reason we can't be allowed to forget is that normal human beings did this. Not mass murderers, but everyday people like you and I who followed orders, who bought the propoganda that Jews, gypsies and gays were not human, that they were inferior and that they were tainting the whole human race with their presence.

We - you and I - have the ability to do this.

Of course, many Arabs argue that Israel has not learned this lesson - and that it is now trying to annhiliate the Palestinians. Rubbish. There is no hatred of Arabs - only fear.

Palestinians could live in peace tomorrow if they accepted the state of Israel, within a couple of decades of peace they could be working, living and voting in Israel. That cannot happen while there is war, and Israel itself is under the threat of annhiliation.

Of course Arabs don't want to accept the existence of Israel - rightly and wrongly - and until they do this, the horrors will continue.

Nb: It's ITP's fault.

There are bigger things to worry about than a Gulf News comment piece - like how did that woman get the job of presenting The Hydra Executive and why is it such a weak copy of The Apprentice.

I belittle the subject because that's how much attention the Arab world has really paid to Palestinians over the years. Everyone has taken from them though. After the 1948 UN mandate led to the Arab-Israeli war, the world saw the Palestinians left with nothing and the Israelis take more land than was granted to them... wait... yes, along with the Egyptians, Jordanians and Syrians.

The Gulf News piece is an opinion, which I don't agree with, but the bottom line is that every side has screwed the Palestinians. Also, up to and including WWII everyone has screwed the Jews.

This, I fear may go on, so let's forget arguing about the opinionated man from Al Ain, and hope that a lasting peace can be found ASAP.

Maybe Gulf News could print those infamous Danish cartoons, which may balance the editorial somewhat...

What of the closure of Pulse 95.3?

17:34, a touch of jealous and envy? Signs of a very low life form at the bottom of the food chain, no doubt. Or not been laid in ages. Pick one.

i am very envious of Dubai and all the really cool, funky people who get to live and work there. It must be such an AMAZING place. The BEST weather, TAX-FREE salary, incredible cultural life, stunning beaches, awesome roads, great driving, no troublesome elections, Time Out Dubai, big buildings that rotate, dirty horrid Pakis finally getting their comeuppance, Serafin, quality Media, world beating human rights, no filthy Gays, the best and brightest from the UK, this blog, Gulf News, Emirates airline, a giant palm shaped piece of shitty concrete polluting the seas and filled with crappy villas, and utter fucking cretins such as anon @1839 who clearly should just tie a piece of concrete around their scrawny moronic necks and through themselves into the nearest swimming pool.

Wow! His time in Dubai really left some scars. Dubai really kicks the shit out of some people. Or maybe he wants the Middle East to just stay the way it is.

Dear Moderator: NEW THREAD SUGGESTION: thanks x

Expatriate! Expatriate! Dr Who and The Dubai Daleks

The Guardian TV critic Gareth McLean is positively apoplectic over the possibility that the BBC will film an episode of Dr Who in Dubai.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/culture/garethmcleanblog/2009/jan/16/1

McLean is not happy about the gay rights situation and does not feel he can visit the City That Cares on account of him being oppressed.
Sarcastic bloggers are keen to point out that it's not the first time the sci-fi series has been filmed in a country where homosexuality is illegal. No, it was filmed in Britain in the early 60s.
With this in mind, lets hear some suggestions for which favourite Dubai media personality you think would make the best Doctor.

Man City are appearing more and more like a footballing metaphor for UAE/Dubai media everyday.

They've failed to get genuine talent (Kaka) and instead have picked up second-rate UK players (Bellamy, Bridge) at massively inflated prices.

Anonymous said...

As long as the talent running the banks in the UK doesn't start coming here we should be OK.

The entire gulf region has taken a hammering as well. The only real difference 'tween UAE and UK is that the UK is far more transparent and accountable. In Dubai people can make up anything they want (including the media).

Gulf News is utter crap. read their leading articles - they make no sense. So ain't surprised that they published that Nazi-Zionism shit. At the same time, it is in line with the views of their Opinion Editor and others at the helm of the editorial section. Their op-ed editor is a confused Palestinian-American who flaunts her LSE degree. I was unfortunate enough to meet her at a media forum in Abu Dhabi last year and she's all crap. All that she knows is that Israel is the evil doer and should be punished and throw out from the land of her ancestors, so that she can then leave the land of her enemy's ally - America - and go home to Palestine.

"GN's op-ed editor is a confused Palestinian-American who flaunts her LSE degree."

She is also incredibly good-looking, according to a source in the GN office, with a "10-out-of-10" figure.

Obviously this is irrelevant to the issue at hand. The holocaust-denial column was unmitigated garbage and has rightfully attracted widespread derision.

This is just a stupid fucking conversation - understand what Zionist is - its not just a jew you fucking morons. This article in Gulf News was just wank - I would suggest the person that wrote it goes to rather good dot com and summons the Wanky shit demon - check it out its the best.
