From a commenter:

Can we get a thread going on City 7’s X factor-style hunt for a new women’s show presenter(s)? It’s proper car-crash TV, which is ironic as it’s hosted by Adam whassisname, the car safety expert. It’s required viewing if you can stand the sheer horror of watching a bunch of impressionable bints being patronized by a panel of cretins who all look like extras from a M&M’s advert. One life-affirming moment follows another as the bald guy and the two fat girls exercise their idiocy in a studio setting not too dissimilar to those that Al Qaeda use when they’re X-factoring their hostages heads off.

For sure. We didn't even realise City 7 still existed!

Impressionable bints being patronised by cretins? Sounds like a regular Tuesday night in Scarletts.

ITP

Well said 14:33.

It is clear City7 is rubbish because of ITP, and more to the point Construction Week.

shitty 7?
rubbish.
and, looking at the wannabes, isn't goingt o improve any time soon..l

It is better than some of the crap reality TV you see in te UK. At least the women in Dubai are better looking than pale freckled drunken idiots from the western world.

Another gem of objective reporting from Gulf News, which just gets sadder and weirder as time goes on. "Reporting" on their parent company and sister paper they come to the conlusion that:

"Al Nisr Group stands out in comparison to many other UAE newspapers through its commitment to transparency.....

By offering audits and transparency, Al Tayer committed Al Nisr Group to a standard to which the rest of the media might aspire....

[XPRESS] has built itself a strong reputation through its tough and investigative stories, which are balanced and inclusive across all nationalities...."

At least the "pale freckled drunken idiots from the western world" have the right to vote and some semblance of equality.

Moron.

What a terrible show. Aren't reality programmes supposed to feature the 'real' people and not sad overweight unfashionable women with issues?
I caught a classic comment 'to be a presenter you have the have the look and the personality'. Rich coming from those two. They say the hardest advice to take is your own.

I actually like the City7TV reality show for the hunt of the next presenter. It was fun - I got to see some of Dubai's female faces, understand them better and I have to say, for a local station that touts on producing original shows, City7TV is doing really well comparatively. A station can always say they are successful when they produce someting that gets the community talking. Positive because they did something original, negative because others cant stand their success. Well done City 7.

A reality show that follows an identical format to countless others in the west is not original. Why would anyone be jealous of a TV station?? I dislike City 7 because its crap, and treats the viewer like a moron (witness the ridiculous shopping show).

The majority of those girls are not TV presenter material, surely. They are awful. If a pig wears lipstick, it's still a pig. And if it's talentless too...it auditions on Shitty 7.

I agree. Notice how both the "presenter" and "reporter" say "debris". Classic City 7. Say no more.

Anonymous 26 October 12:39 would have to be a City 7 staffer? No one can seriously enjoy that channel?

Adam whatsitname - the driver safety guy seems to have a sordid past in safety driving in the UK. Some people would love to get hold of him.....

There seem to have been a few requests recently for a separate post on PR companies in Dubai. Would be interested in the views on this.

Heard a story about Mr Fairservice calling PR companies nothing more than glorified pizza delivery boys at a debate a few years ago... Does this opinion still hold true among journalists? Do PR agencies help or hinder when it comes to getting stories?

Thoughts?

It's true. Although Eileen Wallis does do a lovely stonebaked, thin crust margherita.

Clearly the blogger from 26 October, 2008 20:13
is one of the digruntled losers from the City Women Hunt. Why else would someone waste their precious time blogging about a channel they dont like when there are over 200 channels they can have access to. Either way, it reiterates the fact that there are way too many losers in town moaning about things when they can just jump on the next plane home and lead their miserable tax paying lives the way they deserve

sorry to change the thread but did anyone notice that gavin dickinson has been telling everyone he launched time out..?

rather naughty.

and can we start a sweep to see how long it is before he closes the national down. it took him around 18months for the toady if my memory serves.
lets all look forward to wild promises of the chance to work in 'another' publishing revolution, only for none of the above ever to materialise.

Anonymous said...

nice mention in mediaweek, guys. sadly, can't imagine it will increase visitors to your site since hardly anyone reads the mag!

Anonymous said...

dickinson is full of shit.
i left itp to go work 'with' him and he was full of promises about career development etc. that guy is on this planet for no-one but himself. every time we would mention the promises he made he would blame ' the powers that be'.
i feel sorry for the poor fools that will buy his crap and leave good jobs to go to abu dhabi.
the fact he has tried to take the credit for time out does not surprise me one little bit.

with Gavin and Richard O'S now at The National, an mpending sales exodus from itp could be imminent?

Dickinson is a total blagger. He tried to tap up a friend of mine to go and work for him at AMG.
Loads of big talk, and no action.
Another mouth, who cant, and won't deliver

How does Oct 27, 15:00 know how many people read Mediaweak? It's a touch shoddy (poor design, bland editorial), but the majority of us in here have probably picked up a copy: and probably given it a glance.
It certainly seems to have a high print run if the offices I've passed by are anything to go by.
(NB Two of the DMO quotes stick out like sore thumbs: penned by a staffer perhaps?)

it has its uses!

Anonymous said...

Uses? Such as? There's a real lack of quantatative data in there - meaning it's of little use to the industry it serves. It's a bit like a staff newsletter, to my mind.
The stories (topics and people) covered are, in my opinion, lazy. Some of the writing is okay I guess, if bland.
I think the local media in the UAE deserves better.

Leave Gavin alone please.

Hard to believe, 21.25, what with that well known media writer Andy Buchan in there, too.

Oh.

Can we have a poll on how long Gavin Dickinson will last at The National?

OR maybe a poll on how long The National will last now that Gav's there?

Emirates Today was his idea, that lost 100 million dirhams and the reputation of amg thanks to GD

Is it true he was the main force behind the launch of Time Out?

I worked with Gavin Dickinson at ITP. He was the commercial force behind the formation of what is now ITP Consumer. ITP had no idea how to operate in the Ad Agency World & the 3 Ahlans, Emirates Home + Construction Week, Hotelier, were launched after he got to ITP. They are all huge today. He was the shining star & got offered the big Job from Serafin. Serafin got cold feet & Dickinson walked to start on privatising Dubai Radio. Dubai 92 & Dubai Eye 103.8 were his. He then launched The Toady & it's Arabic sister. The Toady I know for a fact was strangled editorially & Gavin was Commercial Director and was powerless. The Arabic paper he launched is today a rampant sucess, and the move to 24/7 has at least allowed the paper to stop being intefeared with (as much as that is possible). He was the guy who landed Virgin 104.4 & MTV for AMG and will do things at ADMC. The truth is that the ad industry back this guy 100%. I know it as I now sell against him & I keep getting comments like 'wait for what Gavin will do at ADMC'. He might not have launched Time Out but I worked there when he ran all the consumer sales & it was 100% better off than when he arrived. If he offered me a job I would join the same day. He is hard working & fair. Don't belive the bull on this site re people.

Dickinson is about change. Everytime he works somewhere there is action. ITP was changed. AMG was formed only after the CEO saw the results from Dickinson on 92 & 103.8 (remember Sayegh only had Free 96.7 prior and it was a mess). AMG's papers were the drive of change for what was a smallish radio company (they soom picked up & privatised Al Bayan which is huge money spinner) Next it was Outdoor, Events, now TV, Distribution, Printing, Direct Mkting. Dickinson is all about himself I agree, but a lot happens along the way & if you work hard you run with him. I did. He is a driver people & the sado's that moan on this site were probably slackers. He is driving ADMC now & you are moaning on here. Get real. People like him change things so you either like them or hate them. Odd's are he will be a sucess at ADMC. Wonder what they paid to get him...let me guess he is useless, so they paid nothing?

Anonymous said...

those two posts couldn't have possibly come from people working in sales...way too comprehensible.
i rckon gavin paid a member of his editorial team to write them ;-)

As someone who worked on one of the launches mentioned by anon @ 22.41 and helped out on one of the others, I can tell you that the only time I spoke to GD was when I saw him in the elevator. He had absolutely nothing to do with either of them.
