20 days leave for Emarat Al Youm

Emarat Al Youm has been suspended for 20 days for defamation. While the Arabic paper was always edgier than its sister paper, Business 24-7 (the artist formerly known as Emirates Today), this is certainly something of a surprise for a Dubai government-owned publication.

UAE arabic daily Emarat Al-Youm has been suspended for 20 days and its editor-in-chief fined 20,000 dirhams ($5,448) for defamation relating to a 2006 story accusing a stable of giving steroids to horses.

The Abu Dhabi Federal Court of Appeal upheld a lower court's previous ruling on the case brought against the newspaper by the owners of Warsan Stables, UAE daily Gulf News reported on Thursday.

The UAE Journalists Association criticised the ban, which it said will damage to the UAE's reputation with international press freedom and human rights advocacy groups.
“Although we do not have the right to object a court ruling, but we reiterate our rejection of banning the newspaper or any other local newspaper from publishing, association Chairman Mohammad Yousuf was quoted as saying.

How do you feel about this? Fair treatment? And, if there are any AMG readers, can you tell us if there have been internal repurcussions?

Another piece of evidence of the growing rift between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Sheikh Mo's horses were doped, and he was suspended from the International Equestrian Federation (President: Princess Haya bint al Hussain, aka Mrs Mo)while the case is investigated. Compare and contrast to the case of a Dubai Holdings (Prop. Shk Mo) newspaper that accuses an Al Nahyan stable of doping: it was always going to end in tears. Meanwhile, Shk Mo gets on with doing what he loves: spending untold millions on racehorses:

Closing down a newspaper because of a story about a horse is straight-up out of the Sopranos when Tony kills Ralph over Pie-O-My's death.

Funny that these sheikh's treat their horses better than people

except when they are doping them, of course!

You really should put a spoiler warning on these things...

I think this has massive implications for the UAE media market. Is anyone in any doubt?

Forget rivalry between the emirates; it's the poor journos at Emarat Al Youm that are suffering... The 20 days have been deducted from their annual leave, so the guys have been forced to go on holiday now, despite many planning to go on annual leave next month, and during Ramadan. Additionally, they have had 5 days of pay deducted from this month's salary. So it looks like they're the ones paying the fine and not the editor and CEO as reported.

Today, it has been reported that two more papers are being sued for millions - one's an Arabic daily (Dubai's papers are Al Bayan and Emarat Al Youm - any idea who this could be?); second one is about an English paper - again, any ideas which one it could be - my money's on 7 Days.
